Surfaces

Today there are many makes of paper each one having differing properties but with three main surfaces.

1. Hot pressed and Cold pressed Paper

These have two names but are similar surfaced papers, smooth and with very little grain, and are most useful for very detailed work or if pen or pencil work is to be incorporated. They are passed through calendaring rollers, which smooth the surface leaving the paper without grain.

2. Not surface

This is the more usual paper for beginners to use because it is more forgiving with tiny mistakes in detail and is also paper with a natural finish.

3. Rough

This paper allows the brush to skip over the surface leaving behind white flecks of paper that have been missed by the brush even though the brush may have been heavily loaded with paint.

Most of the main paper manufacturers produce at least two of the main surfaces of paper Not and Rough, but it might be more difficult to obtain Hot Pressed.
