Schooldays
Only one example of a large Victorian board school survives and that is Oxford Gardens, built in 1884. At this time it stood on the edge of open land to the north used for cattle and horses. However the first board school was built four years earlier, Edinburgh Road Board School, later known as Barlby Road School, rebuilt after the Second World War. North Kensingon Central School on St Mark's Road, opposite the park, provided further education and training in office skills for those who passed the entrance exam.
Since 1874 there have been educational establishments for the Roman Catholics in St Charles Square, ranging from a private boarding school for boys, a training school for teachers, a primary school, secondary schools and now a Sixth Form College.
The Church of England is less well served for schools. St Helen's School, on the corner of Latimer Road and Highlever Road, now long forgotten, was demolished in the post war period.
