MY SCHOOLDAYS AT ST CHARLES PRIMARY SCHOOL

I am in the middle row, fourth from the left, with white bows.
In 1947, I started school at St. Charles. Prior to the war the building was a training college and during the war had suffered bomb damage. The school had reopened in1946. Many of the rooms were not fit for use, as the damage had been severe. In spite of all pitfalls, we enjoyed our schooldays.
I remember we were sent food parcels from New Zealand, which caused great excitement. Each of us received some apples and a block of lard, which was put to good use during the rationing.
The school had a long cloister with classrooms leading off which was memorable, so we had plenty of exercise. I went home for lunch which lasted for one and half hours. Playtime was spent on the overgrown allotments, which were in use during the war years. The above photograph was taken during a playtime.
I recently met a teacher Miss Breen who taught me 58 years ago. She looked remarkable, after all those years.
