St Charles Hospital

Nurses on Exmoor Street

Photos from North Kensington Community Archive

Our class recently visited the hospital to see the old chapel which was a delight to discover, as we had no idea it existed.

Above the entrance to St Charles Hospital is the original hospital chapel, used for many years as a storeroom. Luckily builders discovered underneath the layers of paint the original painted walls and tilework and it has been beautifully restored. The room is used now for meetings and conferences.

We heard how, in the early days of the hospital, all nurses were required to attend the chapel every day

We were also taken up to the tower which now houses a Gym. This was originally used as the hospital laundry with dirty linen hoisted up to the tower.
